How to change an image ratio without stretching it
Understand the difference between resizing and cropping.
Why this order matters
Resizing changes the dimensions of the whole image, while cropping removes part of the frame. When the target ratio differs from the source, cropping is the correct way to avoid distorting faces and objects.
Check the destination first
If the receiving website or authority publishes its own format and size requirements, follow those instructions first. Keep the original and work on a copy.
Recommended workflow
- Compare the source aspect ratio with the required ratio.
- Position the target frame so the important subject remains inside it.
- After cropping, resize the result to the required pixel dimensions.
Checks before saving
- Forcing width and height independently can stretch the image.
- Check that faces, joints and product edges are not cut awkwardly.
- Crop from the largest source available and reduce size only at the end.
